چکیده

[1] NOx transport and production by lightning for the 10 July 1996 StratosphereTroposphere Experiment-Radiation, Aerosols, and Ozone convective storm is examined using radar, in situ observations and cloud model simulations. Observations and model simulations indicate that most of the NOx produced by the storm was transported out into the anvil. The analyzed NOx flux into the anvil, combined with results from a cloud model simulation, indicate that approximately 60 percent of the NOx transported into the anvil during the observational period is produced by lightning. Lightning flash rate and channel length measurements, obtained using the Office National d’Etudes et de Recherche Arospatiales lightning interferometer, are combined with the NOx budget to give estimates of average lightning NOx production per interferometer flash and per unit flash channel length. The analysis yields production rates of approximately 43.2 moles (2.6 10 molecules) NOx per interferometer flash and 1.7 10 3 moles (1.0 10 molecules) NOx per meter of flash channel. These production rates fall within the bounds of rates derived in previous studies using completely different approaches.

Anvil microphysical signatures associated with lightning-produced NOx

Thunderstorm anvils were studied during the Deep Convective Clouds and Chemistry experiment (DC3), using in situ measurements and observations of ice particles and NOx together with radar and Lightning Mapping Array measurements. A characteristic ice particle and NOx signature was found in the anvils from three storms, each containing high lightning flash rates in the storm core prior to anvil ...

Sensitivity of the NOy budget over the United States to anthropogenic and lightning NOx in summer

[1] We examine the implications of new estimates of the anthropogenic and lightning nitrogen oxide (NOx) source for the budget of oxidized nitrogen (NOy) over the United States in summer using a 3‐D global chemical transport model (Model of Ozone and Related Tracers‐4). As a result of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) State Implementation call, power plant NOx emissions over the eastern...

Interactive comment on “The effect of lightning NOx production on surface ozone in the continental United States” by B. Kaynak et al

This is an interesting model study of the sensitivity of surface ozone to NOx produced by lightning. The conclusion, that on average the contribution is relatively minor, has policy implications because it implies that the background O3 (which cannot be regulated) is not much enhanced by lightning. The paper is suitable for publication, but could benefit by additional discussion of several topics.

Lightning-produced NO2 observed by two ground-based UV-visible spectrometers at Vanscoy, Saskatchewan in August 2004

Ground-based measurements of ozone and NO2 differential slant columns by the SAOZ (Système d’Analyse par Observations Zénithales) and UT-GBS (University of Toronto Ground-Based Spectrometer) instruments during the MANTRA 2004 field campaign are presented herein. During the afternoon of 28 August, a thunderstorm passed over the instruments, which were installed at Vanscoy, Saskatchewan (52 N, 10...

Cloud Resolving Studies of Trace Gas Scavenging and Photochemistry

A cloud resolving online chemistry transport model was developed based on WRF and has been used to study the transport of trace gases, the scavenging of soluble trace gases, and influences of lightning produced nitrogen oxides (NOx=NO+NO2) on local photochemistry. This presentation mainly focuses on the influence of the retention coefficient (i.e. the fraction of a dissolved trace gas which is ...
